Medical Imaging education at the University of Cumbria continues to grow in national profile, with a strong reputation for quality, innovation and close partnership with the health and care sector. Our programmes span undergraduate Diagnostic Radiography (both traditional and apprenticeship routes), postgraduate provision in Ultrasound and MRI, and a broad suite of continuing professional development programmes that support workforce development and transformation across the health and care sector. We are also developing new opportunities within medical sciences and imaging as we expand and diversify our educational offer.
The University of Cumbria’s pioneering Diagnostic Radiography Degree Apprenticeship recently won Best Health Apprenticeship at the Apprenticeship Guide Awards 2025. This recognition reflects the innovative design of the programme, its strong partnerships with employers, and its impact on widening access and supporting national workforce development across the NHS.
We are now seeking a Principal Lecturer in Medical Sciences who will play a pivotal leadership role in the continued development of this expanding portfolio focussed upon medical imaging education. We are looking for an individual with a strong professional and academic profile in radiography and medical imaging. They will have proven experience of leading educational programmes, developing curricula in medical imaging, and working in partnership with clinical medical imaging services in the NHS, Independent Sector as well as other relevant external organisations.
This is an exceptional opportunity to join a motivated and forward-thinking School within the Institute of Health at a time of growth, development and strategic ambition. You will help shape the next phase of our medical sciences provision, supporting teams across undergraduate, postgraduate and apprenticeship routes, and driving excellence in learning, teaching, assessment, and student experience.
You will also be expected to foster strong relationships with external partners, working collaboratively with NHS Trusts, education networks, and professional bodies to ensure our programmes remain future-focused and sector leading. The ability to innovate, lead change and work across complex systems will be essential.

This post will form part of the senior leadership team for Medical Sciences. The role will involve a mixture of remote and on-campus working, with regular engagement with our partner organisations across the region. The base location is negotiable on appointment.
